Safari becomes the second browser to surpass one billion users

Apple’s Safari web browser recently surpassed one billion users, according to a new study, making it the second browser to do so. Even so, it still lags far behind Google Chrome in terms of popularity.
“1,006,232,879 internet users (19.16% of all internet users) now use the Safari browser, making it the second-largest browser with over 1 billion users,” the Atlas VPN report states.
Safari is the second web browser in the top 1 billion users
The stats for the study come from GlobalStats Browser Market Share Percentage. Atlas VPN converted it to numbers using Internet World Stats’ Internet user metric, the organization said.
Google Chrome has three times as many users as Safari’s more than 1 billion, with 3,378,967,819 total users. Microsoft Edge, which according to a survey overtook Safari as the second most popular desktop browser, has around 212,695,000 users.
The Atlas VPN report noted that Apple installs Safari on every iPhone and Mac, which influences what software people will use on the devices.
New privacy features
Apple recently introduced new privacy features in Safari. And at last year’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the company showed off a new look at the browser which received mixed reviews.
As Apple said at the time, its two goals with the new Safari in iOS 15 were to make “commands easier to reach with one hand” and to put “content front and center.”
Additionally, the company added a new privacy report that shows cross-site trackers that Safari’s Smart Tracking Prevention blocked from accessing a user’s information.
And with WWDC22 coming up, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Apple focused more on Safari’s privacy features.
The April 2022 Atlas VPN ranking includes Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Samsung Internet.
