Opera Software fixes Windows Reliability Monitor in browser
Opera Software has fixed the Windows Reliability Monitor issue in the company’s Opera web browser. Last week, we reported that the Opera web browser was causing seemingly unrelated entries in the Windows Reliability Monitor on every startup.
Although the issue did not impact the functionality, stability, or performance of the browser, it did raise questions. What was causing Windows Reliability Monitor to generate and display entries, and was there anything that could be done about it.
Opera Software began investigating the issue last week. The company’s developers quickly identified the problem and created patches to address it. The issue has been resolved in Opera 89 Stable and Opera development editions.
We have verified that this is indeed the case by updating Opera to the latest version and monitoring the Windows Reliability Monitor log for changes during program startup and termination. No additional log entries were created in the latest version of Opera browser.
You can test any application that you run on your Windows systems to see if they cause issues logged by the Windows Reliability Monitor:
- Use the Windows-R keyboard shortcut to open the run dialog.
- Type perfmon /rel and press the Enter key to launch the reliability monitor.
- It takes a few seconds to populate the list.
- Run or stop the program you want to test.
- Refresh the Reliability Monitor window by selecting View > Refresh.
Opera Software has contacted us to provide insight into the issue. According to the company, the issue was related to the browser’s new VPN Pro component. Opera used the Windows Install Provider and API calls generated the series of event logs that Windows Reliability Monitor logged as successful application reconfigurations.
Opera said the issue is not browser-specific and does not impact browser performance, stability, or functionality.
Opera Software responded quickly and fixed the issue. Considering that the problem did not affect the browser’s performance, functionality or stability, it’s a good sign that the issue was addressed in a short period of time.
