How to Fix a Browser That Fails to Display Full Websites

Q. I continue to receive websites that render as text, rather than full HTML rendering. Usually it’s for financial apps and there’s an error message that says I need to update my browser. I generally use Chrome.

A. From what you describe, it appears that your browser is unable to download embedded images from the sites you visit.

I see this on occasion with my browser, and suspect it has something to do with one or more of my plugins.

To quickly fix this problem, I recommend that you reset Google Chrome to its original default settings. This will disable all your plugins and clear your PC’s cache, and this should fix this issue.

If it works and you need to use plugins, you can go back to settings and re-enable them one by one to see if you can figure out which one might be contributing to the problem.

Chrome reset instructions are available at tinyurl.com/helplineresetchrome.

Do not worry. It will not delete any of your saved passwords or bookmarks. But it will make Chrome behave much better. I find that I have to do this once in a while to keep things running smoothly.

Q. I was unable to install updates KB5010472, KB5010342, and KB5010415 on my laptop running Windows 10. My computer displays the message “
Unable to complete updates, reverting changes
”
after reboot. How can I fix this?

A. Windows Updates can sometimes be a hassle to install. Errors tend to be cryptic and unnecessary, and finding a solution can be a lot of work.

The first thing to try is to run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Instructions for doing this in Windows 10 and Windows 11 can be found at tinyurl.com/helplinewindowsupdate

This solution works from time to time, but not all the time.

Another thing to try is to download and run updates manually. Microsoft publishes all of its updates as standalone applications at www.catalog.update.microsoft.com, where you can search for the name of the update you want, then download it to your computer and install it.

This has worked for me on numerous occasions where everything else has failed.

Remember that updates are for all versions of Windows. You will need to know exactly which version you are using to be able to get the correct file.

If you don’t know which version you are using, open a command prompt and type winver and hit enter. The window that appears will tell you which version you have.
