Near Share, Android’s answer to Apple’s AirDrop sharing feature, has now rolled out to Windows users through Google Chrome. It allows users to share files wirelessly and instantly between compatible devices. Last month, the Near Share feature was introduced in the Google Play Services public beta program. Chromebook users also quickly gained access to the feature, as it was reportedly rolling out to Chrome OS. It now looks like Windows users can use Near Share on the Chrome Dev or Canary channels, Near Share functionality can be enabled by following a few simple steps. If you use Chrome Dev or Canary Channel, visit chrome://flags.
The Nearby Share option should appear in the list that needs to be enabled. Once done, restart the browser then go to chrome://nearby. This page should display a list of supported devices that can share files using the new feature. It should be noted that the Windows PC must support Bluetooth in order to use the function. The user must also have a compatible Pixel phone or Chromebook. Both devices must first be unlocked and placed near each other with Bluetooth enabled.
However, you must meet certain conditions for the feature to work as expected. First, you need a Bluetooth-enabled Windows PC and a compatible smartphone or Chromebook. Second, both devices must be unlocked and close to each other with Bluetooth enabled. Finally, if you’re using a Chromebook to test the feature, the Chromebook must have Nearby Sharing enabled in Quick Settings.
Even though I have a Bluetooth-enabled PC, I couldn’t see the feature in action because I don’t have access to a compatible smartphone or Chromebook. If you have devices that meet all of the above requirements, try Near Share and share your experiences in the comments section below. It should also be noted that although Google Chrome on the stable channel (v84.0.4147.105) shows the near share prompt on my system, it still does not open the chrome://nearby page.
