Here’s how to use your computer’s browser to save time online

Most of us have been using the internet for many years now, but there’s always more to learn whether you’re an online pro or a beginner. Don’t overlook these features that can save you valuable time when you’re online.

I was on the phone with my niece recently, helping her figure out her college schedule online. It took me quite a bit of research and more than a few clicks to get to the web page listing her degree requirements. I sent her the link and told her to bookmark the page so she could easily find it the next time she needed the information.

“I don’t know how to add a bookmark,” she said. “What does it mean?”

Some of us may use basic browser functionality as if it were second nature to us. But we must not forget that beginners or others may never have learned these simple skills that can shave minutes off the time their eyes are glued to a screen.

Using bookmarks in your browser

Bookmarks are a way to create shortcuts to web pages you know you’ll want to revisit. It’s a simple way to keep all of your frequently used sites at your fingertips and reduce the time spent searching or typing in a web address.

To bookmark a webpage on Google Chrome, click the star icon at the end of the address bar or hold Ctrl+D.

To see all of your bookmarks, look for the three vertical dots at the top right of the browser. Click on it and select “Bookmarks”. Chrome also has a bookmarks manager that allows users to create folders for bookmarks to organize them.

For Safari, select “Bookmarks” from the menu at the top of the screen, then “Add Bookmark” or hold Command + D.

To show all bookmarks, select “Bookmarks” again, but click “Show Bookmarks”. Be sure to configure iCloud for Safari so that these bookmarks sync across all devices configured for iCloud. Safari also allows users to create folders to organize bookmarks.

Use URL Shorteners

In the old days, you would say every bit of a web address when telling someone about something cool online.

You’ll spell everything, “Go to h, t, t, p, colon, slash, slash, w, w, dot, cool thing, dot com.”

No one goes to such trouble anymore. Most people know that all you have to do is say, “Check out what’s cool, dot com.” Thanks to the advancement of web browsers for this.

Now that’s all you need to enter, and the information before and after the website name is automatically filled in by your browser.

Using Address Bar Search

With Chrome, sometimes you don’t even have to open a search page to find an answer. If you have a question about something and are planning to open Google to search for the answer, this may not be necessary.

Type the question in the address bar where you usually enter a web address.

For many questions, the answer will appear in a drop-down menu without having to go to another webpage. It worked for me with “How old is Bill Gates”, “What time is sunset”, and “Who is the Secretary of State”.

Safari has a similar feature with Spotlight. Click on the glasses icon in the upper right part of the screen. Use Spotlight to find apps, documents, emails, or other things on your Mac, but also use it for calculations, conversions, sports scores, and more.

View someone’s screen remotely

I am in the position of being a remote technical support for my children and my parents. You may have felt frustrated when someone tries to describe what their computer screen looks like so you can help them fix the problem.

There is an easier way. Launch “Screen sharing” by searching for it with Spotlight.

Enter the Apple ID of the person you are helping. They will need to enable screen sharing by clicking the Apple icon in the upper left corner of their screen and selecting “System Preferences”.

From there, ask them to click “Share” and turn on “Screen Sharing”.

You can then see his screen, remotely manipulate files, windows, applications and restart his computer.

Sometimes we can forget that not everyone knows all the tips and tricks that reduce the time certain tasks take online. And even those who know about shortcuts may forget how useful they can be and not use them when they should.

These time-saving tips for web browsers go back to basics and can be helpful to anyone.
