Brown County Navigator – Sleepy Eye Herald Dispatch

Anne Grunert, SAMA Brown County Assessor
Greetings from the Brown County Assessor’s Office. We are finishing the values for the 2022 assessment/2023 taxes payable, as well as preparing for an IT conversion.
You will soon find your tax statement and assessment notice in your mailbox.
The tax statement is for securities that were placed on January 2, 2021 (tax payable 2022).
The assessment notice relates to securities placed on January 2, 2022 (tax payable 2023).
Please pay close attention to your review notice. Brown County, along with most counties in the state of Minnesota, will see significant increases in value, including farmland, single family homes, and commercial/industrial properties. The reason for these increases in value is due to strong sales during our last sales period. These sales took place from October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021. The current sales we are receiving still show that the market is extremely strong with the limited inventory available.
We rely on property sales to estimate the values of similar property types in a certain area. Some sales are automatically removed from consideration; others require further examination. If a property you have purchased meets our verification criteria, you will be contacted by an appraiser from our office. The accuracy of our assessment depends on the sales verification process.
Soon we will be taking photos to prepare for another year of property visits. We will be identified by vests and name badges. This year, we’ll be going back to our normal viewing process of going door to door and leaving tags if no one is home.
Please do not hesitate to contact our office with any questions you may have.
